Cairo, Egypt – Estonia and NATO announced that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland on Friday, remaining there for approximately 12 minutes.

Highlights
  • Trump’s position on escalation
  • Urgent international action

Following this, Sweden, Finland, and Italy—which has NATO’s responsibility for monitoring the Baltic airspace—sent fighter jets to intercept it.

Trump’s position on escalation

US President Donald Trump confirmed from the White House on Sunday that he would contribute to the defense of Poland and the Baltic states if Russia escalates its hostilities. “Yes, I will. We don’t like it,” he said.

Urgent international action

The Estonian Foreign Ministry announced that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency session on Monday at its request.

Earlier this month, NATO aircraft shot down Russian drones after they violated Polish airspace, which Trump described at the time as an “unintentional mistake.”
