Dubai, United Arab Emirates – A senior Kurdish official confirmed that the SDF does not pose a threat to Turkey.

Badran Jia Kurd, Deputy of the Joint Presidency of the Autonomous Administration in Northern and Eastern Syria for Political Affairs, criticized the Turkish role in the Syrian crisis.

He pointed out that “Ankara is trying to export its internal crises and conflicts over issues of peace and internal dialogue to the Syrian interior”.

He also stressed that “the regions of northern and eastern Syria do not pose a threat at all to a neighboring country”.

March 2025 agreement

In addition, he believed that “Damascus is betting on the time factor until the end of this year to end the March 10 agreement. Furthermore, it is reneging on its promises and procrastinating in meetings”.

He considered that Damascus “interprets the terms of the agreement differently”.

Especially with regard to the issue of integrating the SDF into the army, and the timing of implementing the rest of the provisions. In addition, there’s the April 1 agreement concluded between it and Damascus regarding the Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo.

He also added, “The March 10 agreement stipulates in its last clause that the two parties will seek to implement the terms of the agreement until the end of the year. However, these issues may take a longer period of time”.

He hinted at the possibility of extending the agreed upon period.

American position

Regarding the American position, Jia Kurd considered that “the American administration’s openness to Damascus is pragmatic and phased. It is in order to pass some deals”.

He expressed his hope that “Washington will deal with the Syrian file in accordance with the national interests of all Syrian components”.

He also called on the Syrian authorities to “adopt internal national consensus as a basis for building the country’s future”.

Shara statements

The Kurdish official also commented on the recent statements of transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa. In it, he said that “the rights of the Kurds are protected in the constitution.”

He considered that it “does not constitute a guarantee in enhancing confidence, nor does it provide solutions”.

This came after the March 10 agreement was violated two days after it was signed. The constitutional declaration was issued and did not recognize the rights of Kurds and other societal components in Syria.

In addition, the joint Kurdish delegation scheduled to be received by Damascus after the March agreement was not received.

He said, “Talking about the percentages of the components of northern and eastern Syria or any other region is not compatible and realistic with the current circumstances. We are discussing the legitimate rights and demands of all components, regardless of their numbers and percentage.”

October elections

Jia Kurd also considered that “the electoral process scheduled to be held on October 5 does not represent the aspirations of the Syrian people. It is not possible to elect real representatives of the Syrian political will”.

The transitional Syrian president confirmed a few days ago that “the SDF does not represent the entire Kurdish component.”

He added that negotiating with her faces some obstacles.

It is noteworthy that Al-Sharaa and the SDF commander had signed an agreement on March 10 in the Syrian capital.

The agreement stipulated the integration of these forces into the army, while recognizing the rights of all diverse components in the country.

However, obstacles have hindered the implementation of this agreement so far.
