Cairo, Egypt – Venezuela has launched large-scale military exercises in the Caribbean region, a move it views as a direct response to what it describes as the “recent US escalation.” Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López asserted that these exercises aim to demonstrate the country’s strength and full readiness to defend its national sovereignty. Additionally, they aim to enhance the operational readiness of the armed forces to confront any potential threat.
Comprehensive participation of the armed forces and popular militias
More than 2,500 troops participated in the exercises, supported by 12 warships, 22 aircraft, 20 militia boats, and mobile artillery units. The maneuvers included the participation of the People’s Militia, which includes reservists and members of the ruling Socialist Party, as well as state-owned company employees and retirees. All of these participated alongside the regular forces, in an effort to embody the concept of “an armed and prepared people” on land, at sea, and in the air.
Comprehensive simulation of military operations
Padrino explained that the three-day exercises include ground troops, air defense, the use of drones, electronic warfare, and special forces missions. Simulation exercises were also conducted to counter naval and air attacks. They also included countering land infiltration attempts on beaches, using realistic scenarios to enhance rapid response in emergency situations.
Escalating tensions with Washington
These maneuvers come in the wake of repeated US accusations that the Venezuelan government is lenient with drug gangs, particularly the Tren de Aragua, which Washington has designated a terrorist organization. President Nicolás Maduro responded by vowing his country’s right to defend itself against any potential aggression, emphasizing that Venezuela will not compromise on protecting its sovereignty and national independence.
US forces deployed in the Caribbean Sea
In a remarkable move, the United States deployed warships to the Caribbean Sea under the pretext of combating drug trafficking. Washington claimed that its forces killed members of a cartel on a ship carrying drugs. However, the Venezuelan government rejected this statement, considering that the US operations fall outside international law and pose a direct threat to regional security.
Implications of the maneuvers on the regional and international scene
These maneuvers send a strong message to the international community that Venezuela is prepared to defend itself by force if necessary. Washington’s escalation is a test of Venezuela’s relations with its regional and international allies, particularly Russia and China, which support Caracas’s political and economic position.
The strategic message: The maneuvers confirm that Venezuela will not be a weak party in the face of external pressures. It continues to strengthen its defense capabilities amid complex balances in the Caribbean and Latin America, where security risks are increasing and direct external threats are escalating.
