Copenhagen, Denmark – The Danish Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that it had summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Copenhagen, following recent tensions involving Greenland.
This comes against the backdrop of reports of US interference in Greenland’s strategic affairs.
The Danish Public Broadcasting Corporation (D.R) Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said: “Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark would of course be unacceptable”.
“In light of this, I have requested that the US Chargé d’Affaires be summoned for a discussion,” he added.
The authority indicated that the Danish government suspects the involvement of 3 Americans. They are linked to the administration of US President Donald Trump, in secret operations to influence public opinion inside Greenland.
The names of the four Americans were not revealed.
US President Trump had previously stated his desire for his country to control the mineral-rich Arctic island.
He justified this for reasons related to “national and international security.” He did not rule out the option of using force to control it at the time.
Greenland, administratively part of Denmark, is one of the most prominent strategic geographical points in the Arctic.
Its natural resources and vital location spark increasing competition between major powers.
