Washington, United States – US President Donald Trump announced that he will host the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House today, Friday. This event marks a “historic peace summit” during which a treaty will be signed to end the decades-long conflict between the two former Soviet republics.

Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev “will join me at the White House for an official signing of a peace agreement.” He added that the United States will sign bilateral agreements “with both countries in pursuit of shared economic opportunities.” These agreements aim to open new horizons in the South Caucasus region.

Baku and Yerevan fought two wars for control of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is inhabited by a majority of Armenians. The first war occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union, in which Armenia won. The second war happened in 2020, in which Azerbaijan won. Then, Baku seized the entire enclave in a 24-hour attack in September 2023. This led to the displacement of more than 100,000 Armenians from the enclave.

Trump Path to International Peace and Prosperity

According to CBS, the agreement, which will be signed on Friday, grants the United States the rights to develop a 43-kilometre corridor in Armenian territory. This corridor will be called the “Trump Path to International Peace and Prosperity” or “Trip”.

Yerevan announced on Wednesday that its prime minister would meet Trump in Washington. This meeting aims “to strengthen the strategic partnership between Armenia and the United States.” They also noted that “a tripartite meeting with Donald Trump and the Azerbaijani president will also be held.” This meeting will contribute to peace, prosperity, and economic cooperation in the region.

The two countries held talks with the aim of concluding a peace treaty. These talks include discussions that took place in July in the UAE. However, achieving a breakthrough seemed far-fetched at the time.

It is noteworthy that the last meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev was held on July 10 in Abu Dhabi. During this meeting, he laid out the first steps towards achieving a peace agreement.

In his post, Trump wrote that “these two countries have been at war for many years, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.” He added, “Many leaders have tried unsuccessfully to end the war, so far, thanks to Trump.” “My administration has been in contact with both sides for some time,” he said. He also expressed his “great pride in these two brave leaders for doing the right thing.”

The Republican president concluded his post by saying that Friday “will be a historic day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States and the world.”

Trump has always considered himself worthy of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his peaceful efforts in the world.
