Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has achieved a qualitative achievement in the field of organ transplantation.

This came after he successfully performed a liver transplant on a forty-year-old patient. The patient was suffering from liver metastases resulting from colorectal cancer.

This represents a pioneering therapeutic breakthrough. It opens new horizons in the field of oncology and organ transplantation at the regional level.

Drawing new features

Dr. George Pascal Haber said that the success of the operation embodies the hospital’s commitment. They are drawing new features of what is possible in patient care.

He pointed out that providing the best advanced and specialized treatments at the regional level enhances therapeutic outcomes.

It also illuminates the flame of hope for patients facing complex health challenges.

For his part, Dr. Josep Yuba, an abdominal transplant consultant at the hospital, explained that the patient’s condition reflected great complexity.

The cancer returned repeatedly despite undergoing extensive surgeries and intensive chemotherapy treatments.

He pointed out that chemotherapy often controls the disease only temporarily. It loses its effectiveness and the cancer grows again.

As liver metastases become widespread, surgery is no longer an option. Any additional resection would leave an insufficient portion of the liver.

He added that at this stage it was the turn to treat tumors through organ transplantation.

For his part, Dr. Luis Campos, a consultant in abdominal organ transplantation at the hospital’s Institute of Gastroenterology, confirmed that this achievement reflects the hospital’s commitment. They focus on developing complex care.

In addition to raising the familiar boundaries of organ transplantation.

He pointed out that the hospital, which is the first multi-organ transplant center in the UAE, today occupies a prestigious international position.

This comes after more than 900 transplants have been performed since the program was launched in 2017. This includes more than 360 liver transplants.

In addition to more than 100 liver transplants performed in 2024 alone, this is a significant achievement.

Only a few health institutions around the world have reached it.
