Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi succeeded in saving the life of a Kuwaiti citizen, mother of three children. They achieved this by performing a complex double liver and kidney transplant. This was after a long struggle with advanced liver disease and kidney failure.

This partnership comes within the framework of joint cooperation between the UAE and Kuwait in the health field.

This partnership enabled Ms. Nashami to place her name on a joint waiting list. The list would provide timely access to suitable donors from both countries. It thus accelerated her access to the organs required to successfully complete the procedure.

Since the launch of the programme, this cross-border medical coordination has contributed to saving the lives of more than 180 patients in the UAE. This is thanks to an integrated system that brings together the efforts of embassies, airports, and hospitals. It works with high efficiency and ensures that patients reach life-saving care as quickly as possible.

Liver transplant

On the day of surgery, a team of organ transplant experts at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performed a precise and sequential operation. They began with a liver transplant. It was immediately followed by a kidney transplant. This procedure is part of a structured surgical approach. The approach adheres to the highest standards of accuracy and safety.

Dr. Baraa Abdel Gawad, a critical care consultant at the Integrated Hospital Care Institute, explained that critical timing is a fundamental pillar for the success of organ transplants.

He pointed out that the hospital designed the operating environment and facilities in a way that allows for a significant reduction in the time period between obtaining and transplanting organs. This contributes to preserving organ functions and significantly improves patients’ chances of recovery.

The two transplants were performed consecutively and with high accuracy. All measures were taken to minimize blood loss, and both surgeries were completed with complete success.

The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Multidisciplinary Hospital team, supported by a dedicated international patient services team, was keen to closely follow Nashaami’s case. This resulted in an exceptional recovery. It reflects the hospital’s firm commitment to providing integrated medical care tailored to each patient. They aim to ensure the best health outcomes.
