Abu Dhabi, UAE – Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, witnessed the launch of the “Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi” project near the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi. When it opens in 2030, it will constitute one of the largest edifices specializing in music and performing arts in the region. It is equipped with the latest international theatrical and production technologies to present shows, events and artistic activities throughout the year.

The project includes a multi-purpose main hall with a capacity of more than 2,000 seats, an open amphitheater with a capacity of 3,500 seats, and a theater studio with a capacity of 400 seats. In addition to a 250-seat jazz club, the project’s total capacity will reach more than 6,000 seats across its various artistic facilities. To host the finest international artistic productions and provide exceptional cultural experiences to audiences locally, regionally and internationally.

Advanced facilities and equipment

His Highness was briefed on the main plans of Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi, and listened to a detailed explanation of the architectural vision of the project and the stages of its implementation. It includes advanced facilities and equipment designed according to the highest international standards to host the most prominent international artistic productions.

Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed that investing in cultural infrastructure constitutes an essential part of Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive development vision. Which believes in the vital role of the arts in enhancing the quality of community life, consolidating the values of openness and civilized dialogue, and building bridges of communication between different peoples and cultures. Within a forward-looking vision that believes in the importance of culture as a strategic lever for sustainable development and a fundamental driver of the knowledge-based economy.

Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi will be a permanent headquarters for hosting a wide range of international shows. Including opera, ballet, theatre and other live performing arts. It will also provide a platform for long-term artist residencies, international tour partnerships, and co-productions with the world’s leading performing arts institutions. This allows attracting the most famous international artists and bands, and at the same time opens new horizons for Emirati and regional talents.

The project was commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi by the late international architect Frank Gehry, one of the most prominent pioneers of contemporary architecture. Which left a prominent mark on the cultural scene of the emirate through the design of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum, which is expected to open within the cultural district in Saadiyat.

The project embodies an architectural vision inspired by music and performing arts, with a transparent facade that reflects Abu Dhabi’s openness to creativity and cultural exchange. In a qualitative addition to the system of global cultural edifices hosted by the emirate.

Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi will contribute to enriching the cultural scene in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. By attracting and developing the most prominent international artistic productions, and providing a leading platform to highlight Emirati arts and national identity. In a way that enhances the country’s international presence on the map of culture and arts.

The project also aims to enhance community participation in cultural activities, by organizing artistic workshops and launching educational and interactive programs. In addition to supporting the development of local artistic talents and competencies, thus consolidating the presence of the arts in daily life. It enhances its role in consolidating the values of national identity and enriching the cultural scene.

The project represents an important tributary to the creative economy, by supporting the growth of cultural and creative industries and promoting cultural tourism. Attracting investments, talents and institutions working in the cultural sector, in line with the emirate’s goals aimed at diversifying the economy. Enhancing the contribution of knowledge-based sectors and creativity to sustainable development.

The announcement of the “Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi” project comes as part of the ongoing development process taking place on Saadiyat Island. Which includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and Team Lab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. In addition to the Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi, which is expected to open. Reflecting Abu Dhabi’s vision of building an integrated cultural system that consolidates the emirate’s position as a global destination for culture, arts and knowledge.

Dar Al Funun Abu Dhabi embodies the emirate’s commitment to continuing to invest in culture as a fundamental pillar of comprehensive development. It drives creativity and innovation and serves as a lever to contribute to achieving the goals of the comprehensive cultural and development vision. This enhances the position of the emirate and the United Arab Emirates on the global map of culture and creativity.
