Geneva, Switzerland – The UAE welcomed the adoption by the World Health Assembly, during its current session, of a resolution submitted by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan.
The resolution condemns attacks targeting civilians and vital civilian infrastructure, including health facilities.
The resolution emphasized the humanitarian and health consequences of terrorist attacks targeting civilians.
It also noted their impact on the continuity of medical services and the resilience of health systems,
as well as their effect on the provision of medicines, vaccines, safe water, and essential health products.
Condemnation of attacks on civilian facilities
The resolution included a strong condemnation of the attacks launched by Iran
and its affiliated militias against civilians and vital infrastructure in the Gulf states and Jordan.
These attacks resulted in deaths and injuries and caused damage
to health infrastructure, desalination plants, energy facilities, ports, and airports.
In a statement delivered by Ambassador Jamal Al Musharrakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative
to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva,
the UAE affirmed that targeting civilians and health facilities cannot become commonplace or acceptable under any circumstances.
The statement emphasized that the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure is
a fundamental responsibility under international law and a prerequisite
for maintaining regional and global health security.
Warnings of widespread health risks
The statement explained that more than 3,000 missile and drone attacks have been carried out
by Iran and its affiliated militias against countries not involved in the conflict.
These attacks have created serious risks to public health and regional stability.
It also noted the drone attack launched from Iraqi territory targeting the Barakah Peaceful Nuclear Energy Plant.
This was considered a direct violation of international law.
The UAE pointed out that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz threaten vital
supply lines for medicines, vaccines, and essential medical supplies.
Furthermore, these disruptions affect global food and energy supply chains.
The UAE affirmed that the resolution includes mechanisms to assess
the impact of these attacks on mental health, social support, and health systems.
It also expressed its appreciation to the member states that supported
the adoption of the resolution within the World Health Organization.
