Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates, represented by the UAE Fatwa Council, announced the sighting of the crescent moon of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH on Sunday evening, May 17, 2026,
after the completion of the necessary legal and astronomical observations across the various emirates.
Based on reports from the relevant committees and accredited observatories, the sighting was confirmed.
Therefore, Monday, May 18, 2026, will be the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah. The first day of Eid al-Adha will be Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
A comprehensive national system for astronomical observation
The Council explained that the crescent sighting process was conducted through
a comprehensive national system that combines traditional Islamic observation with modern scientific tools.
The observations were carried out through specialized astronomical observatories supervised by scientific institutions within the country.
Furthermore, the process involved collaboration with leading centers in space science and astronomy.
The system included multiple observation stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and other locations.
This ensures the highest degree of accuracy in confirming the start of the new Hijri month.
The Council emphasized that this approach reflects the UAE’s commitment to utilizing modern technologies in service of Islamic law.
It also aims to enhance the reliability of the legal rulings by integrating scientific expertise with established jurisprudential standards.
Moreover, this approach keeps pace with advancements in astronomy and space observation.
The beginning of Dhul-Hijjah and preparations for the rituals
According to the official announcement, Muslims in the country and the Islamic world will begin the first day of Dhul-Hijjah tomorrow, Monday.
This is the month that witnesses the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
In addition, there are the blessed ten days that hold a special religious significance in the Islamic calendar,
due to the acts of worship and good deeds associated with the virtues of this holy month.
Eid al-Adha will be on May 27th
The Council confirmed that the first day of Eid al-Adha will fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, marking the start of Eid prayers, the ritual sacrifice,
the recitation of takbir (Allahu Akbar), and the exchange of greetings among Muslims.
A spiritual and social atmosphere will prevail, reflecting the values of solidarity and compassion.
The UAE Fatwa Council also extended its congratulations to the leadership, people, and residents of the country.
It prayed that God would bring this occasion back with goodness and blessings, and that He would accept the Hajj of the pilgrims.
Furthermore, it asked God to grant the nation continued security, stability, and prosperity.
