Abu Dhabi, UAE – The UAE continues to strengthen its presence in the South and North Poles.
This is achieved through exploratory programs, scientific research, and unprecedented individual trips, the vision of which is to enrich scientific knowledge and contribute to global efforts to understand climate change and protect the environment.
The UAE has strengthened its scientific presence in both poles by officially joining the Antarctic Treaty under Federal Decree No. 165 of 2024.
This enabled the state to participate in advisory meetings and submit national research proposals.
In addition to establishing advanced partnerships with international agencies specialized in climate and polar environmental research.
The UAE also issued Federal Decree No. 164 of 2024 joining the Arctic Council as an observer.
This enhances its role in international dialogue on scientific and environmental issues in the polar regions, and paves the way for broader Emirati participation in future research programs.

Scientific achievement in Antarctica
Last February, the UAE achieved a pioneering scientific achievement through the first joint mission with the Bulgarian Polar Research Institute to Antarctica.
An Emirati team specializing in meteorology and earthquake monitoring installed two advanced stations to monitor weather and earthquakes.
With the aim of collecting vital data that contributes to improving weather forecasting models and studying climate change and its impact on global weather patterns.
In 2025, the UAE signed memorandums of understanding with Argentina and New Zealand to enhance cooperation in Antarctic research and exchange academic expertise.
In addition to developing national capabilities in polar sciences, keeping pace with the UAE’s strategic approach to confronting climate challenges.
Last August, the National Center of Meteorology signed a memorandum of understanding with the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
This is to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of meteorology, polar research, and the development of joint scientific initiatives.
The memorandum aims to consolidate institutional cooperation between the two sides in scientific and operational initiatives in the field of meteorology.
With a focus on exchanging expertise and best practices, particularly in bipolar research, within the framework of the growing strategic partnership between the UAE and Finland.
The UAE was not satisfied with participating in research and exploration.
Rather, she presented prominent national names on exceptional trips in both the South and North Poles.
In a true embodiment of the spirit of challenge for the people of the Emirates and their insistence on creativity and contributing to human knowledge in the harshest environments on earth.
