Abu Dhabi, UAE – UAE National Day, celebrated annually on December 2nd, celebrated a series of pioneering national achievements in the space sector. This underscores the country’s position as a leading scientific and technological power in the region and the world.
These achievements include the launch of the MBZ-SAT satellite on January 14, 2025. The flow of data from the Hope Probe continued until February 2025. In addition to the scientific legacy of the mission of astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi and the progress of the Rashid 2 project towards a lunar landing expected in 2026.
MBZ-SAT and Etihad-Sat: A revolution in remote sensing
The MBZ-SAT satellite entered its successful operational phase in mid-January 2025. It is considered the most advanced Earth observation satellite in the region, having doubled imaging resolution and accelerated data transmission, while supporting multiple vital applications.
In March 2025, the UAE launched Etihad-Sat, the first Emirati SAR radar imaging satellite. Operating in all weather and light conditions, its first images were revealed in October. This opens new horizons for reliable data in the field of smart agriculture. It also supports disaster response and infrastructure monitoring, utilizing artificial intelligence technologies in processing.
“Hope Probe”: Continued scientific observation of Mars
The Hope Probe continues its scientific journey through the Science Data Center with its 16th release, covering data up to February 28, 2025, ensuring the continued flow of information to researchers and the public. The Hope Probe mission stands out as the first Arab mission to Mars, aiming to study the planet’s climate and atmosphere. This is achieved through international partnerships that support knowledge sharing.
UAE Pioneers: Sultan Al Neyadi and the first Arab “space walk”
Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi completed the longest Arab mission in space, spending six months aboard the International Space Station. He achieved the first spacewalk by an Arab and participated in more than 200 scientific experiments.
This mission contributed to building national expertise and enhanced public engagement with the findings of space-based scientific research.
Future projects: “Rashid 2” and the Lunar Gateway
The Rashid 2 project is steadily progressing towards a planned lunar landing in 2026. This follows the completion of development and testing phases in the UAE. The spacecraft has also been shipped to the United States for integration with the Firefly rocket.
The UAE also aims to deliver the “Lunar Gateway – Emirates Compressor” as part of the “Gateway” program by 2030. This aims to enhance exploration and research operations in lunar orbit.
