Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Ministry of Energy announced on Monday the signing of an agreement to purchase natural gas from Jordan, a move aimed at improving the electricity situation and reducing power outages. Syrian state television confirmed that the signing took place in Damascus in the presence of Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir and his Jordanian counterpart, Saleh al-Kharabsheh. The Jordanian minister explained that the agreement stipulates the supply of approximately four million cubic meters of natural gas to Syria daily, equivalent to about 140 million cubic feet. He also affirmed that these quantities will directly contribute to stabilizing the electricity grid and operating power generation plants.

Al-Kharabsheh indicated that Jordan began supplying Syria with gas on January 1st, with quantities ranging from 30 to 90 million cubic feet per day. This comes as part of urgent support for the Syrian energy sector and contributes to reducing power outages. According to the Jordanian minister, the agreement reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to its pivotal role as a regional energy hub. It also reflects Jordan’s approach to supporting its Syrian brothers and strengthening Arab economic integration. Furthermore, it falls within Jordan’s ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation with Syria and meet a portion of its natural gas needs. This will lead to a tangible improvement in the electricity supply, in accordance with approved operational plans. Officials affirmed that the agreement represents a practical step towards supporting service stability in Syria. In addition, it opens the door for further cooperation in the energy sector between the two countries in the coming period.
