Tehran, Iran – Diplomatic sources reported that Iran and France have entered advanced negotiations for a prisoner swap. These negotiations include the release of French citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained in Tehran since 2022, in exchange for Iranian student Mahdieh Esfandiari, who is being held in France.

The Iranian official noted that “Tehran considers Esfandiari’s detention arbitrary.” He also explained that her arrest in the French city of Lyon stemmed from social media posts regarding her position on the war in the Middle East, particularly her anti-Israel stance.
Kohler and Paris… an ongoing issue since 2022
Iranian authorities have detained Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, two French citizens, since May 2022. They are accused of “attempting to destabilize national security” and “inciting protests,” according to Iranian allegations. Their detention has caused repeated diplomatic tensions between Paris and Tehran over the past two years, amid persistent French demands for their immediate and unconditional release.
Cautious French moves
Meanwhile, French authorities have yet to issue official confirmation regarding the details of the potential deal. However, informed sources in Paris implicitly welcomed any development that could lead to the release of the two French hostages. They also emphasized the need to respect human rights and international legal procedures in such cases.
