Amsterdam, Netherlands – Ajax Amsterdam announced on Tuesday the signing of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona during the current summer transfer window.
The Dutch club confirmed in an official statement that Ter Stegen, 34, will join the team on loan for one season, after reaching an agreement with Barcelona.
The German goalkeeper’s move comes after a short stint with Girona, where he defended the Catalan team’s colors on loan during the second half of last season, before returning to Barcelona to begin a new challenge in the Dutch league.
Ter Stegen will once again work under coach Michel, who previously coached him during his loan spell at Girona.
The German goalkeeper joined Barcelona in the summer of 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach, and is under contract with the Catalan club until June 2028.
Ter Stegen’s loan came as he was no longer in coach Hansi Flick’s plans, after Juan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny became the main options in the goalkeeper position, in addition to Barcelona’s desire to reduce the financial burden resulting from the player’s salary.
