Buenos Aires, Argentina – Press reports have revealed the Argentine Football Association’s stance on holding the Copa Viñalesima final at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. This comes after the Spanish stadium was put forward as one of the options to host the highly anticipated match between Argentina and Spain.
The likelihood of the match being moved outside Doha, which was originally scheduled to host the game, has increased. This comes amid recent tensions and conflict in the Middle East.
Both UEFA and CONMEBOL are working to reach a final agreement on the match venue. However, Spanish media reports indicate that the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid has been chosen.
According to the Argentine network TyC Sports, UEFA proposed holding the match at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. However, the Argentine Football Association rejected this proposal.
A final decision regarding the venue for the match is expected between Thursday and Friday, as the sporting calendar is affected by ongoing political tensions. This stems from the conflict between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other.
The Lusail Stadium was scheduled to host the tournament final. Argentina was set to enter the match as the defending champion, having won the previous edition after defeating Italy 3-0.
Rafael Lozan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, said: “It is a match that should be played on a neutral ground, and obviously it should be in Europe, especially with most of the players being on the European continent”.
Conversely, the option of hosting the match at Wembley Stadium in London was ruled out due to it already hosting a friendly match between England and Uruguay. Hard Rock Stadium was also unavailable because it was hosting the Miami Open tennis tournament.
