Bilbao, Spain – Athletic Bilbao secured an important 2-1 victory over visiting Elche on Friday evening at San Mamés Stadium, in a matchday 25 fixture of the Spanish League.
The first half ended in a goalless draw, with both teams making attempts on goal but failing to convert them into goals.
In the second half, Athletic Bilbao succeeded in opening the scoring through Gorka Goroseta in the 64th minute, taking advantage of an organized attack that gave the home team the lead.
Elche responded quickly, after being awarded a penalty which Andre Silva converted into an equalizer in the 68th minute, bringing the game back to square one.
But Goroseta returned to give Bilbao the lead again, scoring his and his team’s second goal from a penalty kick in the 89th minute, securing a valuable victory for the home side.
With this victory, Athletic Bilbao secured their third consecutive win and their tenth of the season, bringing their points tally to 34 and placing them eighth in the La Liga standings. Elche, meanwhile, remain on 25 points in sixteenth place, just one point above the relegation zone.
