Iowa, USA – On Tuesday, US security authorities announced a horrific tragedy that shook the city of Muscatine in eastern Iowa. A gunman opened fire indiscriminately and targetedly, killing six members of his family. He then took his own life with a gunshot, during a series of horrific shootings across the otherwise quiet city.
The Muscatine Police Department, in an official statement to the media, indicated that the initial, intensive investigation into the series of incidents “clearly points to a severe domestic dispute as the root cause.” This dispute escalated rapidly.
Police officers found four victims dead from gunshot wounds inside a house. This occurred immediately after law enforcement responded to urgent reports from neighbors and residents of hearing heavy gunfire.
The gunman was chased and committed suicide on the riverfront.
Although the suspect fled the scene before police and investigators arrived, officers were able to quickly and accurately identify him based on neighbors’ accounts. He was identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, a resident of the same city.
City Police Chief Anthony Keyes, in an urgent press conference held to clarify the circumstances of the incident, said the gunman was later found by search patrols on the city’s riverfront promenade near a pedestrian bridge. He explained that the perpetrator committed suicide by immediately shooting himself as officers attempted to approach him and persuade him to surrender his weapon.
Discovery of other victims and the perpetrator’s criminal record
Following additional intelligence suggesting the gunman may have had other victims, police conducted extensive searches. They found the bodies of two more men believed to have been shot in cold blood by McFarland; one was found in a nearby home, and the other inside a local business.
Keiss suggested that all six victims were likely relatives of the gunman. While police have not officially released names, an ABC affiliate reported that at least two of the victims were young children.
The police chief told reporters that McFarland had a long criminal record and a history of security violations, but declined to provide further details about the nature of those violations to protect the ongoing investigation.
Muscatine is a small, quiet city of about 24,000 residents. It is located approximately 250 kilometers east of Des Moines, the capital of Iowa.
