Doha, Qatar – The State of Qatar announced the death of its former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, one of the most prominent leaders in the country’s modern history. His name is closely associated with the economic, political, and developmental transformation Qatar underwent over nearly two decades. He then handed over power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was born in 1952 and received his military education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. After graduating, he held a number of military and political positions, including Commander of the Qatari Armed Forces. He then became Crown Prince and subsequently assumed the rule of the country in 1995.

During his reign, Qatar witnessed unprecedented growth across various sectors. He launched major infrastructure development projects and invested natural gas revenues in building a modern economy. As a result, Qatar became one of the world’s leading countries in terms of per capita income. The country also expanded its education, healthcare, housing, and public services.

On the international stage, Sheikh Hamad strengthened Qatar’s presence and pursued an active foreign policy. He also contributed to enhancing Doha’s role as a mediator in several regional and international issues. Furthermore, his reign saw the launch of Al Jazeera, which became one of the region’s most prominent media organizations.

His name is also linked to Qatar winning the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This event marked a historic turning point for the Arab region, making Qatar the first Arab country to host the tournament. He directly supported this project during its initial preparation years.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani voluntarily abdicated in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in an unprecedented move in the region. He emphasized the importance of transferring responsibility to a new generation capable of continuing the development process.

With the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar lost one of its most prominent leaders, whose name is synonymous with the founding of the modern state. Official mourning continues amidst messages of condolence from world leaders, in recognition of his role in supporting development and enhancing Qatar’s regional and international standing.
