Mogadishu, Somalia – In a diplomatic move that has raised many questions, the Somali government has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Abdullahi, to Mogadishu for “urgent consultations.” This recall follows a wave of political controversy within the Somali government after the ambassador’s participation in an avocado industry conference hosted by the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
Avocado Industry Conference and Israel
This controversy arose after the widespread dissemination of inaccurate reports on social media platforms, alleging that the ambassador had participated in an event hosted by Israel.
These accusations came at a highly sensitive time, coinciding with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s stance toward Israel, accusing it of attempting to establish a military presence in Somalia and the region. This followed Tel Aviv’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, a move Mogadishu considers a violation of its sovereignty.
Internal investigation to adjust diplomatic compass
Contrary to what has been reported in the media, a careful review of the identity of the organizers showed that the “7th African Avocado Conference and Exhibition” was organized by the “Avocado Kenya Society” (ASOK), a leading professional body representing farmers and exporters in Kenya.
Somali media reports indicate that the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an internal review of the ambassador’s participation to ensure adherence to established protocols for obtaining the necessary authorizations to attend international events.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been briefed on the details of the incident, a move reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring that diplomatic actions align with national political principles.
