Singapore – As part of his participation in the Asian security summit (Shangri-La Dialogue) in Singapore, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hagsett held a series of strategic meetings. These included high-level talks with Vietnamese leader Tu Lam and Defense Minister Phan Van Giang. At the same time, he delivered firm messages regarding the Iranian nuclear issue.
Strategic partnership with Vietnam
During his meeting with Tu Lam on Friday, Hegseth praised the trajectory of relations between Washington and Hanoi, saying, “I believe there are many ways we can expand this partnership, to show the world that two countries that were at odds decades ago now view the world with mutual respect and respect for sovereignty.”
These meetings come at a time of geopolitical complexity for Vietnam, which is caught between its maritime disputes with Beijing and its heavy economic dependence on China as its primary trading partner.
A clear American warning to Iran
In a significant development, the US Secretary of Defense issued a strongly worded warning to Iran during remarks made from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, docked in Singapore. He emphasized that the Iranian government must abandon its nuclear program. He also indicated that Tehran’s options are now limited.
The Secretary cited recent statements by President Donald Trump, explaining: “Iran can either do it the right way through a negotiated agreement, or it can face other options,” alluding to US military pressure.
China and the imminent threat in the two oceans
On the international competition front, China’s rapid military modernization and its behavior in the Indo-Pacific region are key topics of discussion at the summit.
Higgin had previously emphasized that “the threat posed by China is real and could be imminent.” He also asserted that the Chinese military is training for a real confrontation.
The Secretary explained that Washington will bolster its defense capabilities to counter the growing threats. Furthermore, he pointed to Beijing’s hostile stance toward Taiwan.
An American vision of vital interests
General Hegseth is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Saturday to leaders and diplomats from around the world. According to the Pentagon, his speech will focus on “a rational approach to protecting vital U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific region.”
This summit comes at a time of increasing global instability, ranging from escalating tensions in the Middle East to the ongoing war in Ukraine. As a result, the Shangri-La Summit is a crucial platform for shaping U.S. security policy in a region experiencing intense geopolitical competition.
