Washington, DC – In a move that threatens to shake up NATO, the Wall Street Journal revealed on Thursday that US President Donald Trump is considering a plan described as “punitive” against some member states. This comes in response to what the White House considers the allies’ “failure” to support the US-Israeli war effort against Iran in recent weeks.
Redeployment of forces and closure of major bases
The newspaper quoted unnamed US officials as saying that the plan under consideration includes radical measures, most notably the withdrawal of US forces from countries that Washington classifies as “non-contributing” or “passive” in confronting Tehran. It also includes redeploying those forces to allied countries that have demonstrated more explicit support for the US position.
According to the report, the plan could also include closing at least one major US base in Europe. Germany and Spain were specifically mentioned as potential targets for this punitive measure.
The White House: “NATO has abandoned the American people.”
In a statement reflecting the extent of the transatlantic divide, the newspaper quoted White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt as saying on Wednesday: “It is truly sad that NATO has abandoned the American people for the past six weeks, while it is the American people who fund the defense of the allies,” referring to the Trump administration’s displeasure with the lack of direct European military involvement in the war that broke out on February 28.
The “two-week” truce and the shadow of the nuclear threat
These shocking leaks come a day after the United States and Iran announced, early Wednesday morning, a two-week truce brokered by Pakistan, to pave the way for negotiations in Islamabad.
This de-escalation came at the last minute before the expiration of Trump’s deadline, during which he threatened to “destroy an entire civilization” if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz and comply with the terms of the new agreement.
Observers believe that Trump’s move to punish NATO reflects his “America First” strategy. Furthermore, he seeks to transform the alliance from a collective defense organization into a tool supporting US offensive operations in the Middle East.
If this plan is implemented, it could lead to the collapse of Europe’s security architecture. Moreover, the plan comes at a sensitive time when regional powers are trying to solidify a fragile truce that has left thousands dead and wounded and widespread destruction in the region. This puts the future of NATO at risk under Trump’s unpredictable presidency.
