Moscow, Russia – Tensions between Russia and Britain escalated after Russian President Vladimir Putin directly accused London of orchestrating an “organized terrorist attack” targeting Russian territory and vital institutions. Putin stated that Moscow reserves the right to respond with all possible means to protect its national security and sovereignty. He also threatened to take measures that could include decisive political, military, and economic actions.
During a lengthy press conference at the Kremlin, Putin presented what he described as “documented intelligence evidence” indicating that Britain was planning sabotage operations inside Russia. He asserted that these actions constituted a “flagrant violation of international law and an unprecedented act of aggression.” He added that Moscow would not hesitate to respond to any threat against the Russian people or the country’s strategic interests.
For its part, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned that any attempt to implement these plans would be met with a swift and strong response. It also indicated that “all options are open and no measure to defend the state can be ruled out.” Moscow summoned the British ambassador to lodge a formal protest. Furthermore, it is considering imposing new economic sanctions and measures to restrict trade and investment with Britain.
In London, diplomatic sources said the British government is closely monitoring the situation and has not yet issued any official comment on the Russian accusations. British media outlets, however, considered Putin’s statements “a dangerous escalation that could raise tensions between the two nuclear powers.”
These Russian statements come amid escalating tensions between Russia and Western countries, particularly following recent economic sanctions and regional conflicts. This adds a new layer of complexity to bilateral relations between Moscow and London. Under these circumstances, there are concerns that the current political confrontation could lead to a wider security escalation in Europe and beyond.
