Tehran, Iran – A member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts confirmed on Sunday that the name of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will remain that of Iran’s leader. He indicated that his successor has already been chosen and will be announced soon.
Continuing the legacy of Khomeini and Khamenei
The official added in a video published by Iranian state media that “the person who will continue the path of Imam Khomeini and the path of the martyred Imam Khamenei was chosen by a majority vote, and the name Khamenei will continue.”
The statement emphasized that the decision was made as part of procedures within the Assembly of Experts to ensure the continuity of Iranian leadership in accordance with the established principles of the Islamic Republic. It also confirmed that the official announcement would be made in the coming days.
Internal reactions
This move sparked widespread reactions within Iran, with local media circulating images of supporters raising pictures of Khamenei in several provinces. They expressed their support for the new leader and their continued adherence to the revolutionary path of the leadership.
Political analysts confirmed that this step reflects the regime’s desire to maintain internal stability. It also aims to reassure influential forces within the state that the leadership’s course will not change.
Regional and international context
These developments come amid escalating regional and international tensions surrounding Iranian policies, including its nuclear program and interventions in the Middle East.
Observers believe that the announcement of Khamenei’s successor will test Iran’s ability to manage a power transition internally without triggering political or social unrest. At the same time, international pressure on Tehran is mounting.
Some see the inclusion of Khamenei’s name alongside that of his successor as a symbolic message affirming the continuity of the revolutionary and political line that has characterized Iranian leadership since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
