Pyongyang, North Korea – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised the soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces, in remarks that have sparked international debate. Speculation has arisen about the impact of this support on the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war and regional balances of power.
In a formal address to the cabinet and military leadership, Kim stated, “Our loyal soldiers fighting alongside Russia demonstrate the true spirit of military cooperation and solidarity.” He also indicated that Pyongyang’s stance reflects its commitment to its strategic alliances and underscores the strength of relations between the two countries.
North Korean state media added that the leadership was celebrating what it called the soldiers’ “heroic achievements.” Meanwhile, international concerns are growing over North Korea’s increasing military involvement in conflicts beyond its borders, particularly in light of international sanctions.
These statements come at a time when reliance on foreign fighters and logistical support from external countries is growing in the Ukrainian conflict. This adds new dimensions to the conflict and further complicates diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement.
Observers believe that Kim’s praise of his soldiers may carry a dual message: internally, to bolster national morale and military cohesion, and externally, to send public signals of support to Moscow. Therefore, this move could increase tensions with the West and reignite the debate about the influence of regional powers on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
