Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed that the end of the ongoing war in the country remains uncertain. He indicated that it is impossible to predict when it will end given the continued military escalation and the worsening humanitarian situation.
Warnings of expanding occupation
The Lebanese Prime Minister warned that the Israeli army’s actions and officials’ statements reflect intentions that extend beyond the current military operations. These intentions include expanding the occupation of Lebanese territory and establishing buffer zones. This threatens to impose a new reality in the south.
The war has resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 people and the displacement of more than one million Lebanese. Meanwhile, Israel has issued evacuation orders covering vast areas of land. The displaced are facing dire humanitarian conditions with a lack of basic services. Furthermore, the infrastructure in the host communities is under increasing strain.
Diplomatic moves to end the war
The Lebanese Prime Minister stressed that his government would intensify its political and diplomatic efforts to end the war, despite receiving no response so far to Lebanese calls for direct talks. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining internal stability amid escalating tensions.
Despite the intensification of military operations, thousands of residents in southern Lebanon continue to remain in their areas. They insist on their refusal to leave their homes. Many express their desire for a definitive end to the conflict, after years of repeated rounds of fighting that have burdened them.
