Gaza, Palestine – UN agencies have expressed grave concern over what they described as attempts to alter the demographic composition of the occupied Palestinian territories. They warned that ongoing actions on the ground could complicate the prospects for a political settlement and undermine the two-state solution, threatening regional stability and exacerbating tensions.
Reports issued by UN officials confirmed that settlement expansion and the accelerated pace of construction in certain sensitive areas, in addition to restrictions imposed on Palestinians, raise serious concerns about the demographic balance. These reports also stressed the need to adhere to international law and relevant UN resolutions.
UN officials indicated that any unilateral changes to the demographic or geographic reality could create new facts on the ground that would be difficult to reverse in the future. Consequently, this weakens the chances of reaching a just and lasting political solution. The UN called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or undermine trust between the two sides.
In the same vein, several countries called for the resumption of the political process and the revitalization of negotiations. On the other hand, these countries considered preserving the legal status of the occupied territories a crucial step to prevent a wider escalation of the situation.
These warnings come at a time when the region is witnessing a rise in political and security tensions. Therefore, there are increasing international calls to halt unilateral actions and work towards achieving a comprehensive de-escalation that paves the way for a sustainable political solution.
