Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Army Operations Command announced today that it has established full military control over the city of Deir Hafer in the eastern Aleppo countryside. This comes after the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from the area.
Military sources confirmed that army units immediately began extensive clearing operations and securing residential neighborhoods upon entering the city. They focused on dismantling mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) left behind by the withdrawing forces. This is aimed at ensuring the safe return of civilians.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense had previously indicated the suspension of airstrikes and artillery shelling against SDF positions in the area. This came after the SDF decided to withdraw from the western bank of the Euphrates River in Aleppo province.
On the political front, the United States entered the fray with direct threats to increase economic pressure. According to the Wall Street Journal, citing US officials:
The reactivation of the Caesar Act: Washington threatens to impose harsh and comprehensive sanctions. This will happen if the Syrian army expands its military operations against US-backed groups.
The US administration is concerned that the attack could lead to a wider campaign targeting its partners on the ground. Officials believe this could destabilize areas of northern and eastern Syria and hinder efforts to combat ISIS.
Washington fears these developments could deepen the rift between its security partners in the region. This would weaken the united front against terrorist threats.
Political circles are watching closely to see how these US threats will affect the Syrian army’s next moves. The question is whether Damascus will be content with capturing Deir Hafer, or will continue its advance into SDF-held areas.
