Washington, DC – Politico, citing high-ranking government sources, revealed that the Trump administration presented a list of demands to Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez. These demands pertain to reshaping Venezuela’s foreign policy and internal affairs to align with US interests.
Dismantling foreign alliances
According to the publication, the US demands focused on ending the “hostile” foreign presence in Caracas. Washington insists on expelling foreign networks and removing representatives and networks affiliated with Iran and Cuba, as well as any other entities the US considers a threat to its interests.
The US would halt Venezuelan oil supplies to countries it designates as “adversaries.” This list typically includes Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. It would also take proactive and decisive measures to dismantle international drug trafficking networks.
Internal political path
Domestically, the US administration conveyed its expectation that free elections and a smooth transition of power would be ensured.
However, sources noted the absence of any “strict timelines” for these conditions. They confirmed that holding elections is not on the table in the foreseeable future, indicating that security and geopolitical issues are currently the priority for Washington.
Overlapping international contexts
This move comes at a time of intertwined international issues; previous media reports have indicated that accepting some Russian conditions in other matters (such as the Ukrainian crisis) could represent a tactical option for the United States to reduce the number of open conflict fronts.
