Helsinki, Finland – Finnish authorities announced today the detention of an international cargo ship called “Vitberg”, which was en route from Russian ports to Israel,

due to a security suspicion related to the safety of infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.

A spokesperson for the Finnish police explained during a press conference that security forces

boarded the ship to conduct a thorough inspection and interrogate its crew.

This comes after suspicious activity was detected indicating its involvement

in causing physical damage to communications and internet cables.

Those extending under the seabed in the Baltic Sea region,

an area that has witnessed similar incidents during the past two years.

According to official information and marine traffic tracking data, the ship flies the flag of “Saint Vincent and the Grenadines”,

The ship departed from the Russian city of St. Petersburg. The ship was headed to the port of Haifa in Israel.

The detention of “Wittberg” comes at a time of concern among NATO and EU countries,

This concerns the security of underwater cables and vital installations.

Accusations are increasing against some commercial vessels coming from Russian ports

for carrying out sabotage or intelligence activities in strategic waterways.

There has been no official comment yet from the Russian side

or the Israeli maritime authorities regarding the ship’s detention.

Finnish police confirmed that investigations are still underway to determine the extent of the damage

and whether the act was intentional or the result of a navigational error.
