Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a historic move reflecting the growing alliances between rising powers in the “Global South,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Ethiopian counterpart Abiy Ahmed announced that they are raising the level of bilateral relations between the two countries to the level of a “strategic partnership.”
This announcement followed extensive talks held during Modi’s first official bilateral visit to Ethiopia. The two leaders described it as a “turning point” that would propel relations toward broader horizons of security and development cooperation.
Modi from the Ethiopian Parliament: Unleashing economic potential
In a speech before a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, Modi emphasized that this partnership aims to capitalize on opportunities in several vital sectors. These include the exchange of technical expertise and the development of digital capabilities.
Cooperation in the clean energy sector and mineral exploration is also key. The partnership further aims to strengthen supply chains and foster joint medical collaboration.
Modi also described Ethiopia as “a key partner for India in Africa,” praising its active role in counter-terrorism initiatives and multilateral platforms.
Investment power and rapid growth
For his part, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed India’s supportive approach to the priorities of the African continent, highlighting the pivotal role of Indian investments. India is the largest foreign investor in Ethiopia, with more than 615 companies operating in diverse sectors.
Abiy Ahmed predicted a significant economic boom for Ethiopia. Indicators suggest that GDP growth will exceed 10% this year. This growth opens the door to further partnerships with India.
Education and defense: pillars of the new partnership
The partnership was not limited to the economic sphere; it also encompassed educational and security dimensions. Modi announced a doubling of scholarships for Ethiopian students at Indian universities. The aim was to strengthen cultural and academic ties.
Both sides agreed to strengthen military cooperation and exchange intelligence information to address regional security challenges.
Cultural tour and community meeting
During the visit, the two leaders toured the Friendship Park and the Science Museum in Addis Ababa. Modi also met with members of the Indian community, expressing his appreciation for the warm official and public welcome.
This strategic partnership sets a new model for South-South cooperation. It combines India’s technological strength with the investment opportunities and rapid growth of the Horn of Africa region.
