Brussels, Belgium – The European Commission has escalated its rhetoric against Russia, asserting that the seizure of frozen Russian assets is no longer a secondary option but a fundamental pillar of the EU’s defense strategy and its financial and military support for Ukraine.
The Commission explained that directing these funds to Kyiv sends a strong political message: Europe will not back down from protecting its security and stability, and will not allow crises to be used as a means to impose a new reality on its eastern borders.
European sources confirmed that the move is currently undergoing thorough legal review to ensure its compliance with international law. Meanwhile, consultations continue among member states to reach a final version that enjoys broad consensus.
Brussels viewed the diversion of Russian assets to a direct source of funding for Ukraine as a significant shift in European deterrence tools. This comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
