Washington, DC – Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green has announced her resignation. She has ended a career marked by loyalty to the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement and commitment to the far right, but also by a strained relationship with President Donald Trump.
In a video lasting more than ten minutes, Green said she did not want her district to witness a “damaging and hateful election battle.” She indicated that Trump had threatened to support a rival candidate against her following disagreements over Epstein, foreign policy, and healthcare.
Greene described her resignation to ABC News as “great news for the country.” Trump confirmed he was unaware of her decision beforehand, adding, “It doesn’t matter… I think she should be happy.” Her last day in office is expected to be January 5, 2026.
The relationship between Trump and Epstein has sparked widespread controversy within the Republican Party, especially after the Republican president recently signed a law requiring the Justice Department to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Since her election in 2020, Greene has been described as one of the most prominent voices within the MAGA movement. However, she has advocated for mutual loyalty between legislators and leaders, emphasizing the importance of acting according to one’s conscience on certain issues. This has strained her relationship with the Washington political establishment.
Georgia Governor Brianne Kemp will call a special election within 10 days to fill the seat until January 2027. This will be before the party’s primary elections scheduled for May.
