Cairo, Egypt – Colombian President Gustavo Petro, during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, called for the prosecution of US President Donald Trump and a number of US officials. This came against the backdrop of recent US military strikes against boats in the Caribbean. These strikes resulted in the deaths of more than 12 people.

Sharp criticism of US policies

Petro said the attack targeted “poor young people trying to escape poverty.” He asked, “Was it necessary to launch missiles against these defenseless people?” He emphasized that while they were carrying limited quantities of drugs, they were not major dealers.

The Colombian president also directly criticized Washington’s anti-drug policy. He argued that it “does not aim to stop the flow of cocaine into the United States, but rather seeks to impose control over the peoples of the South and support a policy of hegemony.”

sensitive political context

Petro’s statements come at a time of increasing tension in relations between Latin America and the United States. This is particularly true amid ongoing debate over the effectiveness of the US campaign against drugs. Many in South America consider this campaign to be a cause of increased violence rather than a reduction.

Petro’s intervention is seen as one of the strongest public stances ever taken by a Colombian president against Washington in international forums. This reflects Bogotá’s new approach to adopting a more independent discourse from traditional US policy.

Potential repercussions

Analysts believe that Petro’s call for Trump’s prosecution could open a new chapter in tensions between Colombia and the United States. This is especially true given that the latter is considered a key strategic partner for Bogotá in the areas of security and the economy. However, according to observers, Petro’s speech expresses a broader dissatisfaction in Latin America with US interventions and punitive policies. These policies have not achieved the desired results in combating drugs. Instead, they have exacerbated poverty and organized crime.
