Cairo, Egypt – Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister warned that continued tight restrictions on arms exports jeopardize his country’s international credibility. He said security partners are beginning to lose confidence in Switzerland as a reliable partner. This situation threatens the historically neutral country’s position on the global stage.
In statements to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper and the European platform Modern Diplomacy, Pfister said that the government had proposed a review of the War Materials Act last February. This review would allow for greater flexibility in the export of arms and defense equipment. However, he stressed that Parliament must assume its responsibility in pushing this review forward. He asserted, “We must demonstrate that we are a reliable security partner, and our credibility is at stake.”
The minister pointed out that the traditional policy of neutrality is no longer sufficient in a world witnessing dangerous security transformations. He explained that cyberattacks and drones are a growing threat. He also added that Switzerland urgently needs to develop its defense capabilities. He revealed plans to introduce a new system to counter these threats in the coming period.
Pfister emphasized that military cooperation with international partners is now a necessity, not an option. He warned that drone attacks could paralyze vital infrastructure if partnerships are not strengthened.
