The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Egypt has won membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028, during the elections held on Tuesday, October 14, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Egypt receiving 173 votes.
The ministry said in a statement on Tuesday: This victory marks Egypt’s third membership in the council, including two terms during President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s tenure, reflecting the confidence in Egypt’s active role in the field of human rights at the international level and supporting human rights work.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that this victory constitutes a fundamental pillar in the state’s efforts to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, and recent years have witnessed significant developments in this area.
It was represented by the launch of the National Human Rights Strategy in 2021 and the follow-up on its implementation through executive reports, the latest of which is the fourth report, which His Excellency the President of the Republic received from the President of the Supreme Permanent Committee for Human Rights on September 30.
His Excellency’s directives to begin preparing a new national human rights strategy to be implemented after the current strategy expires, and to develop the criminal justice system and update correction and rehabilitation centers.
Expanding social protection programs and empowering women, youth, and persons with disabilities, integrating the national human rights strategy into the plans and budgets of a number of ministries and agencies, and intensifying training and capacity-building programs within state institutions to ensure support for human rights.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has played a pivotal role in supporting this nomination by preparing a comprehensive plan to promote it over the past months, which focused on showcasing the intensive national efforts made in the field of human rights.

Egypt’s election comes to affirm the international appreciation for the achievements made by the Egyptian state in recent years at the national level in the field of promoting human rights.
And the promotion of the values of democracy, the rule of law, and citizenship, extending the series of successes achieved by Egyptian diplomacy on the international level,
And as new evidence of the international community’s confidence in the Egyptian vision towards supporting stability and development, respecting international law, and strengthening the global human rights system.
Egypt is the safety valve
Egypt’s election also comes as a culmination of its pivotal role in supporting security, peace, and stability, and its relentless efforts in de-escalating tensions in the region.
The latest of these was the historic Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit held on October 13, which represented a turning point in the region’s history and reflects international appreciation for Egypt’s sincere efforts to support peace and the values of tolerance and coexistence, indicating support for human rights.
