Trump Hints at Reassessing US Position
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump stated he does not rule out reconsidering his country’s position on the Falklands issue, emphasizing that his policy toward various dossiers undergoes continuous review. Responding to a question regarding the US stance on the islands, Trump said: “I review all positions constantly; and this is just one position among others.” For years, Washington has maintained a policy of avoiding explicit alignment with either side of the dispute while recognizing Britain’s de facto control over the islands.
American Pressure on London
According to The Telegraph, the US administration is considering abandoning its neutral stance on the sovereignty question, linking this maneuver to Washington’s demands for Britain to raise its spending on military and defense capabilities. The newspaper noted that a lack of progress on this issue could prompt the United States to declare more explicit opposition to the British position regarding sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
Argentina Maintains Sovereignty Claim
Conversely, Argentina continues to assert its sovereignty claim over the Falklands archipelago, which it considers part of its national territory despite decades of British administration. Located in the South Atlantic Ocean roughly 600 kilometers off the coast of Argentine Patagonia, the islands were the site of a 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over sovereignty. The developments carry added significance given the close relations between Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei, as any shift in the US position could push the Falklands sovereignty file back to the forefront of international discussion.
