Praia, Cape Verde – At least 25 people were killed, most of them students and young people, after a bus fell into a ravine on Fogo Island in Cape Verde, after veering off a mountain road and plunging from a height of about 30 meters, according to the official Inforpress news agency, as reported by Reuters.
Bus Plunges Into Deep Ravine
The accident occurred late Saturday evening on a mountain road north of Fogo Island, when the bus veered off course and fell into a steep ravine. Reports indicated that several passengers were injured in the crash, and the wounded were transported to the San Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital on the island for treatment.
Students Among the Victims
The official agency explained that many of the bus passengers were elementary and high school students, causing widespread shock across the island. The Ministry of Education noted that the trip was not organized by local schools, but was rather a private annual outing organized independently by the bus driver.
Driver Among the Deceased
The bus driver was among the victims of the crash, according to Inforpress citing officials at the Ministry of Education. Operations to assist the injured and recover victims continued at the scene, while authorities have not yet announced the cause of the bus veering off the road. Competent agencies are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which is considered one of the deadliest road accidents in the country in recent history.
