Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo – Britain announced a new funding package exceeding £50 million to support efforts to contain a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bringing total UK aid to £78 million as confirmed cases surpass 6,000.

Surveillance, Treatment, and Field Deployment

The UK Foreign Office specified that the funds will bolster disease surveillance, support frontline health workers, deliver medical treatment, and enable safe burial protocols to prevent community transmission. Additionally, London deployed public health experts to assist local emergency response teams, with UK Minister for Africa Kirsty McNeill underscoring the urgency of scaling up response measures.

Rare Bundibugyo Strain Lacks Approved Vaccines

Ultimately, the current outbreak stems from the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain, marking the second-largest and fastest-spreading outbreak of its kind on record. Containment efforts face severe operational hurdles due to the lack of approved vaccines or targeted treatments for this specific strain, necessitating robust international support.
