Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerian authorities announced the rescue of 33 people who had been kidnapped by an armed group in the northwest of the country, in the latest security operation aimed at countering the escalating activity of armed groups and kidnappings in some areas.
Authorities explained that the abductees were freed during a security operation carried out by Nigerian forces in a region in the northwest of the country, noting that the operation targeted members of the armed group and aimed to protect civilians.
Kidnapping for ransom is one of the most significant security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where armed groups target villages and main roads, abducting civilians for ransom.
Authorities have confirmed the continuation of security operations to pursue the militants and dismantle kidnapping networks, along with increased security presence in areas where armed groups are active.
The release of the hostages comes at a time when Nigerian authorities are intensifying their efforts to counter security threats, amid public demands for enhanced protection of residents and to prevent a recurrence of the mass kidnappings that have sparked widespread fear in recent years.
