Damascus, Syria – French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed his country’s commitment to establishing strong relations with Syria during his visit to the capital, Damascus. This marks the first visit by a head of state from a major Western power to Syria since the political changes that have taken place in the country.
Strengthening bilateral relations
Macron’s remarks came during his talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. During these talks, he emphasized the importance of developing bilateral relations between Paris and Damascus. He also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in various fields to serve the common interests of both countries.
The French president explained that his country views the current phase as an opportunity to rebuild bridges with Syria. He also emphasized the continuation of political dialogue and support for stability in the region.
Supporting regional stability
Macron indicated that France sees the need for Syria to play an active role in calming tensions in the Middle East. He also stressed the importance of joint action to address regional crises and enhance security and stability.
He also stressed his country’s support for a “free and pluralistic Syria that respects all its components.” He affirmed that respecting diversity and protecting all segments of society are fundamental to achieving stability and development.
A new phase of openness
The French president’s visit comes amid signs of growing diplomatic openness between Damascus and several Western capitals, following years of political estrangement. Paris seeks to open a new chapter in relations with Syria, while simultaneously discussing reconstruction, economic cooperation, and regional issues of mutual interest.
Observers believe the visit could represent a significant step toward revitalizing Syrian-French relations. They emphasize this point if its outcomes translate into practical understandings in the coming period.
