Washington, DC – The United States announced new measures targeting financial networks linked to ISIS in several regions around the world, as part of ongoing international efforts to deprive extremist groups of the funding they rely on to carry out their operations and expand their activities.
The US Treasury Department confirmed that the latest sanctions and measures targeted individuals and entities accused of participating in money transfers and providing logistical and financial support to ISIS operatives through complex networks spanning Asia, Africa, and Europe. These networks also exploited various financial methods and informal transfer channels.
US authorities explained that this move was coordinated with international partners and security and intelligence agencies, with the aim of tracking suspicious financial flows and disrupting the economic infrastructure upon which the organization relies to maintain its activities in several regions experiencing security instability.
US officials indicated that terrorist organizations are increasingly relying on more sophisticated financing methods, including shell companies and networks of intermediaries. In addition, they depend on cross-border financial transfers, which necessitates broad international cooperation to track them and cut off their financial supply lines.
Counterterrorism experts believe that targeting financial resources is one of the most effective tools for weakening extremist organizations, as it reduces their ability to recruit, arm, and carry out operations, as well as diminishing their influence within the regions where they operate.
These moves come as the United States and its allies continue their efforts to counter transnational security threats. These efforts focus on pursuing the financing and logistical support networks that are essential for the continued activity of terrorist groups worldwide.
