Tel Aviv, Israel – Mohamed Haji presented his credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday. He is the first ambassador of the self-proclaimed Somaliland. This move comes amid a rapidly growing political rapprochement between the two sides in the strategic Horn of Africa region.
Reception ceremony for the Ambassador of Somaliland
The official ceremony took place at the Israeli president’s residence in West Jerusalem. Herzog’s office also released a photo documenting his receipt of the credentials. This step follows Tel Aviv’s announcement on April 15th of the appointment of its first ambassador to Hargeisa, the Somali capital. It came after Israel’s December 2015 decision to officially recognize the Republic of Somaliland, a move that was met with firm and unequivocal rejection from the Federal Government of Somalia.
Significance of the timing of the appointment of the Somaliland ambassador
This diplomatic move coincides with the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s unilateral declaration of independence in 1991, May 18, which also dissolved its historic union with the Republic of Somalia.
This development at this particular time carries extremely serious geopolitical implications. This is due to Somaliland’s unique geographical location in the heart of the Horn of Africa. Its northern coastline directly borders the Gulf of Aden, facing the Yemeni coast. This comes at a time when the Houthi group controls vast territories and maritime access points.
Observers believe that the accelerated exchange of ambassadors reflects a mutual desire to forge a security and military alliance. This alliance would provide Tel Aviv with a strategic foothold near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to secure its ships. In return, the separatist region would receive political and economic support to bolster its aspirations for international recognition.
