Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have announced a new Ebola outbreak.
This comes amid growing fears that the disease could spread further within affected areas.
New cases detected in Ituri region
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) confirmed in a statement
that it has identified approximately 246 suspected cases of the virus, along with 65 deaths.
Most of these deaths were concentrated in the Mongualo and Ruambara health zones, according to the news website NewsNow.
The statement also indicated that suspected cases have been discovered in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province.
This raises concerns about the potential spread of the infection to additional areas within the country.
The African health organization expressed its concern about the possibility of the virus spreading further.
It attributed this to several factors, most notably the high population movement, ongoing displacement,
and the security disturbances occurring in the affected areas.
Regional coordination to contain the outbreak
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) confirmed
that it is working in coordination with the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan,
as well as international partners, to strengthen surveillance and rapid response measures to contain the outbreak as quickly as possible.
Health authorities also urged the public to adhere to preventive guidelines and to immediately report any suspected symptoms.
They further emphasized the need to avoid close contact with potential cases and to support medical response teams working in the field.
Ebola is a highly dangerous viral disease. It causes severe hemorrhagic fever,
and mortality rates can be high in some outbreaks, particularly in areas with weak healthcare systems.
