Rabat, Morocco – In a diplomatic move that reinforces the international momentum supporting Morocco’s position, the European Union expressed its strong condemnation of the recent attack targeting the city of Smara.
He also called for the need to adhere to calm and prioritize the language of political dialogue to end the fabricated conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
Official European condemnation and a call for negotiations
The European Union Ambassador to Morocco, Dimitar Tzanchev,
stressed that targeting civilians in the city of Smara is an act that “must be condemned.”
He emphasized that the current situation requires a sense of responsibility to prevent any slide towards military escalation.
On the other hand, Tzanchev pointed out in a blog post that the only way
out of the crisis lies in “negotiation” and not in provoking regional security.
This was in line with the recent Security Council resolution No. 2797 of 2025.
Supporting the Moroccan initiative and international legitimacy
The European message not only condemned the attack, but also reaffirmed the European Union’s strategic position
By supporting the achievement of a “fair, lasting and acceptable solution for all parties”
Ambassador Tzanchev emphasized that the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco constitutes
a solid foundation that is consistent with the United Nations Charter and international resolutions
On the other hand, this reflects a growing European recognition of the realism and credibility of the Moroccan vision for resolving the issue
Increasing international isolation of separatist parties
This firm European stance is in line with the positions of major international powers, most notably the United States and France.
Which had earlier been quick to condemn the events in Smara
Observers believe that this “diplomatic consensus” puts the Polisario Front
and those behind it in a suffocating international isolation.
The international community now views these actions as a blatant undermining of the United Nations’ efforts
and a direct threat to stability in the North Africa and Sahel region.
With this stance, the European Union is sending a clear message that regional stability is a red line.
He stressed that a political path based on realism and consensus is the only way to turn the page on this conflict.
This serves the interests of the peoples of the region and strengthens the strategic partnership
between the two sides of the Mediterranean.
