Tel Aviv – Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a strongly worded statement on Sunday, describing the current year as a “tremendous test” for the Jewish state.
This came as Israeli media reported the assassination of a senior Hezbollah military commander in southern Lebanon.
This development on the ground could jeopardize the fragile ceasefire agreement.
Assassination of the commander of Bint Jbeil
On the ground, Israel Channel 12 quoted a senior security source as saying that Ali Reza Abbas,
a Hezbollah commander in the strategic town of Bint Jbeil, was killed.
Abbas, nicknamed “Hajj Abu Hussein Barish,” was a prominent military strategist.
He reportedly held a pivotal position in the leadership of the Radwan Force (Hezbollah’s elite unit) during 2024.
This assassination comes amid escalating tensions. The Israel army announced
it had carried out attacks targeting Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon,
claiming they had violated the ceasefire understandings that went into effect at midnight last Thursday.
Open moves and scenarios
The Israel army explained that its forces stationed south of the “yellow line” detected northern movements that posed a direct threat.
This prompted an intervention by the air force and artillery to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure.
Therefore, the strike is considered the first assassination of a high-ranking commander since the ceasefire came into effect.
This opens up a range of possible scenarios in the region. This comes amidst Israel assertions
that it possesses “full authorization” to defend itself and eliminate any border threat immediately upon detection.
