New York, United States – China and Russia used their veto power in the UN Security Council to block a draft resolution submitted by Bahrain aimed at ensuring the security of navigation and opening the Strait of Hormuz, during a session dedicated to discussing the repercussions of closing the strait amid escalating regional tensions.
Disrupting the draft resolution
The use of the veto blocked the passage of the draft resolution, which sought to secure one of the world’s most important waterways, amid growing concerns about the impact of its closure on trade and energy supplies.
Bahraini warnings
Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani warned that the Security Council’s failure to take a decisive stance would have serious repercussions for the world, stressing that the project represents a serious attempt to deal with what he described as repeated Iranian aggressive behavior.
Call for international action
Al-Zayani stressed that the Strait of Hormuz represents a shared international responsibility, calling for collective action to ensure the continuity of navigation in it, and emphasizing that its closure poses a direct threat to the interests of countries and vital supply chains around the world.
