Basra, Iraq – In a new security breach targeting vital sectors of the Iraqi economy, local media and international sources reported early Saturday morning that a drone crashed inside the Burjesia oil complex in Basra province, in the southeast of the country. This resulted in a large fire at facilities belonging to foreign oil companies operating in the area.
Details of the attack and fire control
Reuters quoted security sources as saying that the attack targeted warehouses and storage facilities belonging to international oil companies located west of Basra.
The drone strike on the site caused a fire in the early morning. Plumes of smoke were seen rising from the area, which houses sensitive offices and logistics depots. Despite the scale of the incident, there were no immediate reports from Iraqi health or security authorities of casualties among local or foreign workers. The full extent of the material damage is still being assessed by technical teams from the Ministry of Oil and the investing companies.
Repeated incidents of “drones” in Basra oil fields
This attack comes just days after a similar incident. On March 31st, the Iraqi News Agency reported that another drone had crashed in the West Qurna-1 oil field in the same province. This raises serious questions about the security gaps in protecting the airspace over strategic oil sites.
Security and economic messages
The Burjesia area is a major logistics hub for foreign companies, and targeting it represents an escalation aimed at undermining confidence in Iraq’s oil investment environment. This attack coincided with rising regional tensions. The perpetrators—who have not yet claimed responsibility—are seeking to pressure foreign interests in the country. Iraqi security forces have completely cordoned off the perimeter of the oil complex. Investigation teams and forensic experts have begun examining the wreckage of the drone to determine its identity and the party that launched it. Authorities are currently working to strengthen defensive measures around oil wells and company facilities. This aims to ensure the continuity of production and prevent the recurrence of such attacks, which threaten the lifeblood of the national economy.
