New York, USA – UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of a peacekeeper and the wounding of another while they were carrying out their duties with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon. Guterres stressed that such attacks on peacekeepers constitute a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to security and stability in the region.
The Secretary-General emphasized the need to bring those responsible for the incident to justice. He also called on all parties in Lebanon to cooperate fully with UNIFIL to ensure the protection of civilians and international forces. He affirmed that the United Nations will continue to support peace and stability efforts in southern Lebanon.
This comes at a time of heightened tensions along Lebanon’s southern border. There are concerns about an escalation of violence and its impact on civilians and the international forces tasked with monitoring and maintaining security.
