Lima, Peru – At least 92 people have died and more than 23,000 have been affected by torrential rains and flash floods that struck several regions of Peru during the current rainy season,
marking one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country in recent times.
Peruvian authorities reported that the heavy rains caused widespread flooding and landslides,
destroying hundreds of homes and cutting off major roads, particularly in mountainous and rural areas, hindering relief efforts and access to those affected.
Urgent humanitarian aid
Emergency teams have declared a state of maximum alert, continuing search and rescue efforts and providing urgent humanitarian aid to affected families,
amid warnings that severe weather conditions will persist in the coming days.
For its part, the Peruvian government confirmed that it is working to accelerate relief and reconstruction plans,
allocating additional resources to support the most affected areas,
as concerns grow that the humanitarian crisis will worsen if the rains continue at the same pace.
